Shanghai Family December Issue Out Now!

Welcome to our holiday issue

by Alex Sheffield | Fri, December 08, 2017

Can you believe it's December already? I can't. It seems surreal that I'm sitting here writing the final editor's note for this year. And sadly, after working on 53-plus print issues of Shanghai Family and City Weekend, it also happens to be my final editor’s note as it’s time to say “see you soon, Shanghai!” For three-and-a-half years I’ve worked alongside the most amazing team and brand, but it’s time for my own family to pack our bags for pastures anew.

It feels akin to a dream, as I just can’t understand how our four years here could have flown by so fast. But as the saying goes, time flies when you’re having fun! Moving to the other side of the world is a crazy thing, but what gets you through is the buzz of the adventure, exploring new lands, focusing on things that make you happy, and – of course – great friends and family. I dedicate this, my last issue, to all those who have entered my life during my time here. I’ve grown and learned so much from every one of you, even if our paths crossed for just a short time.

To the Ringier team: wow – what a rollercoaster! It’s been a blast right? I don’t think I’ve met such a dedicated and hard-working bunch of people, who love to have fun whilst remaining ever passionate about the products that we all work so hard to produce. But, Shanghai Family has been the catalyst that made my Shanghai story come alive. Since my first day in the office, I found my own “Shanghai family”. Each one of us that has worked on, and will continue to work on, this magazine has a passion to deliver hopefully the best of what you, the amazing readers, want to see.

Managing Editor, Alex

Thank you to you – both our readers and everyone who’s contributed to Shanghai Family. Your continued support throughout the years is the reason this magazine exists. And last but by no means least, I have to say thank you to my other half, Leo. Our time in Shanghai has proven to be a definitive one – I came here with a boyfriend, and leave with a husband! I look forward to all the adventures yet to come for us, and our very own family.

So back to this issue, which is all about the festive season – a great time to reflect on the past year and our loved ones. Check out our cover story Deck the Halls to find out how to make your own decorations for your family to cherish long after you also leave Shanghai.

We explore how scent has the power to conjure memories from times gone by in our feature Living Memory. Sarah Forman uncovers a Holiday Origin Story with the history of Christmas cards, and suggestions on cool locations for your family photo this year. Finally, Michaela Fulton has the tough job of sampling some of the city’s mulled wine offerings in In Season. It’s an action packed issue with so much more that I don’t have space to mention. So all that’s left for me to say is, relax, grab a mince pie, and enjoy! To the next adventure . . .
