From tree lighting ceremonies to Christmas dinners, Shanghai Disney Resort spreads holiday cheer

To many, there's nothing better than going home for Christmas--spending time with family, sharing presents and traditions and eating way too much turkey and cookies. However, sometimes it just doesn't happen; and that's not necessarily a bad thing. Shanghai has become somewhat Christmas-obsessed the last few years, and with Shanghai Disneyland making its appearance, there's even more holiday cheer in the air. If you're in town for the big day and need a festive fix, take your little elves over to the Shanghai Disney Resort and soak up the atmosphere. Here's a look at what to do:

Stroll Mickey Avenue

Disney is a pretty exciting experience no matter when you go, but the holiday vibes give it an extra lift from the moment you arrive. Mickey Avenue is decked out with traditional colored wreaths with unique emblems – lookout for all your favourite characters among the greenery – as familiar Christmas tunes sing out from the sound system.

Watch the Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony

Delve deeper into the park and towards the huge 60ft traditional Christmas tree, where every evening at 5:30 there’s a tree lighting ceremony. Find a good spot to watch the tree lights dance to Disney Christmas themed music – even big kids will find it hard to resist the magic.

Give and Receive Presents

Tis’ the season to enjoy giving (and receiving) gifts so keep your eyes peeled for QR codes dotted around the park. If you manage to scan enough, you can collect a special Disney gift as you leave the park. Obviously, you can also buy merchandise for your loved ones, if the mood strikes you.

Sit Down for a Traditional Christmas Dinner

If you’re craving a traditional Christmas dinner with all the trimmings, Lumiere’s kitchen is a good option for the whole family. As it’s situated within the Disneyland Hotel, you don’t actually need to pay to enter the park to enjoy the facilities. They have a Sumptuous Christmas Feast Buffet Dinner on Christmas Eve (Saturday 24th December) and Christmas Day (Sunday 25th December) – along with a Semi Buffet Lunch on the 25th – with Mickey, Minnie and friends entertaining the little ones throughout.

Enjoy a Date Night

If you’re looking for a romantic date-night or dinner with friends, head over to the Aurora restaurant at the 8th floor of the Disneyland Hotel. It offers not only spectacular views of the fireworks over the Enchanted Storybook Castle, but also a 10-course set menu feast over the holiday season. The special Christmas menu is available on December 24th and 25th and has been developed by Executive Sous Chef Elliot Zhou. With 18 years of experience, and as the previous Sous Chef of Jade 36 in Shanghai Pudong Shangri-La Hotel, Executive Sous Chef of Mr. & Mrs. Bund and Ultraviolet, he’s created a menu with Asian influence, using classical techniques and a touch of molecular gastronomy, including delicacies like oysters and caviar, wagyu short ribs and roasted suckling pig.
