SHANGHAI COMMUNITY INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL
Embracing New Ways of Learning Together
As SCIS heads into its second week of virtual learning, the entire SCIS Community deserves a collective congratulations for all their hard work. There is no doubt that the school closure has resulted in a fair bit of uncertainty, but it has also been an amazing testament to the flexibility, dedication, and problem-solving shown by teachers, students, and parents.
Although entirely online, in many ways this period has forced everyone at SCIS to collaborate and come together as a community to find new ways to help student learning. From SCIS faculty to all its families “thank you for your encouragement and support throughout as this has helped make e-learning a success. Change is never easy, but the resilience and commitment on display from teachers, students, and parents helped us start off on the right foot.”

SHANGHAI AMERICAN SCHOOL
For the last few weeks, Shanghai American School students have been sharing photos from a multitude of locations including Turkey, USA, Thailand, Australia, South Africa and more.
As part of Distance Learning @ SAS, Grade 6 social studies teacher Max Schwartz (currently based in Bali, Indonesia) sends videos introducing his students to the learnings of the day.
Max Schwartz with students Ana Sophia and Billy in Bali, Indonesia
This week’s topic was particularly challenging: compare human rights in Ancient Greece to human rights that exist in our world today and evaluate the extent to which there has been continuity or change.
As SAS students Ana Sophia and Billy watched the video, they noticed Mr Schwartz was conducting his teaching from Bali and quickly realised WE’RE IN BALI TOO! Billy immediately asked if Mr Schwartz could come over to review the material in person and when he said yes, as mum Caty described, “It was like Christmas morning”. Nice one Max!

Hilary Zhao, Grade 9 studying at ome
“E-learning has allowed me to know my child better. I'm so proud of her hardworking spirit. My IT skills have also improved a lot, having handled quite a few connection problems... Life goes on, but all of this is nothing because we are healthy and most importantly, we are dealing with this as a family, an SLAS Family.”
Drishti Singh, Grade 5 studying at home
“E-learning is actually quite amazing. Kids can collaborate as a group… solve challenging assignments together.”
Mr James Jack, Secondary History Teacher
“This has been a productive two weeks for e-learning at SLAS! All of my classes in the sixth, seventh, and eighth grade have been able to continue their studies due to the efforts of all teachers at SLAS…
I’ve been able to teach all of my courses by providing the students with my PowerPoint presentations and voice note inputs.”
